At Jeanes, we offer support groups that encompass all phases of the surgical process. These include pre-operative, post-operative and long-term weight loss maintenance.
Before surgery, Jeanes patients attend an educational class. The basic principles of weight loss surgeries, complications, expected outcomes, dietary regimens and discharge instructions are reviewed. The class is presented by qualified clinicians and dietitian. We frequently invite a patient who has undergone bariatric surgery to share their experience and answer questions. The class lasts approximately two hours. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
After surgery, we offer ongoing support and education. Attending a monthly peer support group meeting is an effective strategy for dealing with both physical and emotional issues that may accompany weight loss surgery. Other bariatric patients can provide support, encouragement and empathy. These meetings are professionally guided by qualified clinicians and dietitians. The meeting is a group discussion, supplemented with supportive materials, special activities and guest speakers.
