Gastroenterology

The skilled gastroenterologists at Jeanes Hospital provide excellent care for patients with a wide range of digestive ailments, including complex and difficult-to-treat disorders. Common disorders treated at Jeanes include:

- Abdominal pain

- Irritable bowel

- Constipation

- Dyspepsia

- Cramping

- Motility problems

- Diarrhea

- Swallowing difficulties

- Vomiting

- Fever and infection

- GI or rectal bleeding

- Jaundice

- Reflux and heartburn/indigestion

- Eating disorders

Symptoms are quickly and expertly assessed by a medical team that has ready access to X-rays, fluoroscopy, MRIs, CT scans and ultrasound. A thorough physical examination and history in conjunction with these tests helps to pinpoint the origin of the problem. For more detailed evaluations, Jeanes has fully equipped suites to perform procedures such as colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, endoscopy, enteroscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP).

Once a diagnosis is made, an individualized treatment plan is designed. Care delivery is managed by the gastroenterologist and involves the entire Jeanes GI team, including nurse specialists, registered dietitians, endoscopy technicians and anesthesiologists, radiologists, surgeons and other specialists.

The gastroenterologists Jeanes are skilled at performing therapeutic endoscopies and other GI interventions, including:

  • Polyp removal
  • Gallstone removal
  • Opening of bile duct strictures
  • Biopsies
  • Variceal banding
  • Esophageal or bile duct stenting
  • Feeding tube insertions

In addition, the surgeons at Jeanes collaborate with gastroenterologists to provide advanced surgical care, including minimally invasive procedures, for diseases of the GI tract. In most cases, all necessary testing and follow-up care is handled at Jeanes with no need for trips to other locations.
