Hematology

Hematology is the discipline of medicine that involves evaluation and treatment of diseases of the blood. Typically these disorders involve the red blood cells (anemia or low blood count which causes fatigue); white blood cells (which fight infection) and platelets (cells that help the blood clot); the coagulation system (proteins that help the blood clot) and cancers involving the blood and lymph nodes (leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma). Hematologists at Jeanes Hospital are committed to seeing patients in a prompt fashion. Typically, the hematologists will evaluate the patients, order appropriate diagnostic tests, and develop a treatment plan when appropriate.

The hematologists have always had a strong partnership with the clinical laboratory and the pathologists, because a key component of hematology is evaluation of the peripheral blood smear (looking at the patient's blood under the microscope), and ordering specialized tests to evaluate problems related to the blood counts or blood clotting.

With the growth of cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, and bariatric surgery at Jeanes Hospital, the hematologists interact with these specialists on a daily basis to help prevent or treat any blood problems related to these interventions.

The hematologists are always available for consultations regarding the transfusion of blood products as well as the management of anticoagulation (blood thinners). For patients who present to the emergency room with more severe blood problems, services such as pheresis (running one's blood through a machine to remove harmful proteins) can be instituted  rapidly. Finally, for patients who have blood or bone marrow cancers that do not respond to standard treatment, referrals can be made to the Temple Bone Marrow Transplant Program, which is located on the Jeanes Campus.
