Medical Oncology

Medical Oncology is the field involving the treatment of malignant tumors, primarily through the use of medications. The care of patients with cancer has progressed significantly throughout the past several decades, and especially over the last five to ten years. There have been advances made in screening (the detection of lesions before they become malignant or tumors in their earliest stages before they result in symptoms), prevention, treatment of cancer, and supportive care (managing any side effects that are related to the cancer or its treatment). Cancer patients are living longer than ever before, often with a very acceptable quality of life.

In 2009, there has been a focus on multidisciplinary and personalized medicine. A multidisciplinary approach acknowledges that multiple specialists are involved in the treatment of patients with cancer. It is a team approach, involving not only the medical oncologists, but also primary care physicians, surgeons, radiologists (both diagnostic and interventional), pathologists; radiation oncologists; as well as nutritionists, physical therapists, and social workers. The medical oncologists at Jeanes evaluate patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, order appropriate tests to determine the stage (extent) of the cancer, and in consultation with other specialists, offer patients the best possible treatment for their disease. This treatment is often begun in the hospital and continues on an outpatient basis. The oncologists also assist in the management of side effects of the disease or its treatment when patients are in the hospital. The Medical Oncologists at Jeanes have access to clinical trials (studies that aim to improve the survivals of patients with cancer as well as to minimize the side effects of their treatment) and aim to bring state of the art treatment to patients seen in the Jeanes Community. These doctors participate in multiple educational conferences at Jeanes, including the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds, the monthly GI pathology and breast cancer conferences, and the Bone Marrow Transplant conferences. These conferences foster interdisciplinary communication, and keep doctors up to date in a field that changes almost daily.

For years, with the exception of hormonal therapies for breast and prostate cancers, medical oncologists have primarily used chemotherapy to shrink tumors or prevent removed tumors from recurring. Chemotherapy is not selective and side effects occur due to its effects on normal cells. Many treatments have been developed and are used by the Medical Oncologists at Jeanes to alleviate effects such as fatigue, nausea, and pain. The development of personalized medicine has led to medications that attack specific proteins on the surface of the cancer cells or on the inside of the cell. The aim is to achieve a more direct treatment of a particular tumor while minimizing side effects to the rest of the body. The development of these medications has improved survival rates for patients with breast, colon, and lung cancers (among others) as well as lymphomas. The Medical Oncologists at Jeanes often administer these targeted agents in combination with chemotherapy, both in the hospital and in the office setting. They have interests in specific types of cancer and collaborate among themselves and with other disciplines to offer patients in the Jeanes Community the best possible care.
