Oncology

Medical oncology involves the treatment of malignant tumors, primarily through the use of medications. Cancer care has progressed significantly during the past ten years. There have been advances in screening (the detection of lesions before they become malignant or tumors in their earliest stages before they result in symptoms), prevention, treatment of cancer and supportive care (managing any side effects related to the cancer or its treatment). Cancer patients are living longer than ever before, with higher quality of life.

Medical oncologists at Jeanes Hospital take a team approach to treatment, involving primary care physicians, surgeons, radiologists (both diagnostic and interventional), pathologists, radiation oncologists, nutritionists, physical therapists and social workers in care planning. Jeanes medical oncologists evaluate patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, order appropriate tests to determine the extent of the cancer and, in consultation with other specialists, offer patients the most appropriate treatment for their disease. Treatment often begins in the hospital and continues on an outpatient basis.

Jeanes oncologists also assist in managing the side effects of cancer treatment when patients are in the hospital. The medical oncologists at Jeanes have access to clinical trials -- studies designed to improve the survivals of patients with cancer as well as to minimize the side effects of their treatment.

Medical oncologists have traditionally used chemotherapy to shrink tumors or prevent removed tumors from recurring. New treatments have recently been developed and are used by the medical oncologists at Jeanes to alleviate fatigue, nausea and pain. The development of personalized medicine has led to improved medications that attack specific proteins on the surface or the inside of cancer cells. The goal is to achieve a more direct treatment of a tumor while minimizing side effects to the rest of the body. The development of these medications has improved survival rates for patients with breast, colon and lung cancers, as well as lymphomas.
