Pulmonary Diseases

The skilled respiratory specialists at Jeanes diagnose and treat patients with the full range of conditions - from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to pneumonia, asthma and sleep apnea. The clinicians at Jeanes also manage severe lung conditions such as bronchiectasis, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, asbestosis and other pulmonary disorders.

The Pulmonary Medicine group includes board-certified pulmonary and critical care specialists, respiratory therapists, registered pulmonary function technicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists and registered dietitians. This team uses the facilities and resources of the Jeanes Pulmonary Function Laboratory to evaluate the presence, severity, progression and response to therapy of lung disease. Imaging tests, including CT and MRI, as well as laboratory tests, bronchoscopy and related pathological tests are also performed. Based on a comprehensive evaluation, every patient coming to Jeanes receives a clear diagnosis and a plan for advanced and effective therapy.

The Medical Intensive Care Unit at Jeanes offers full ventilatory support for patients in respiratory failure. When needed, patients with severe disease may be referred to our partners at the Temple Lung Center for advanced tests or treatments such as evaluation for lung transplantation or lung volume reduction, or enrollment in clinical trials of novel medications.

In most cases, required clinical visits and follow-up care are coordinated with our pulmonary specialists. Disease management typically includes a personalized combination of education, medical therapy (e.g., bronchodilators, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, drugs to reduce cough or mucus), oxygen, nutrition advice and physical therapy.
