Learn more: Jeanes Hospital Receives 2010 Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award.

The Jeanes Hospital Primary Stroke Center provides the highest level of care - from urgent diagnosis and treatment, to long-term rehabilitation and early prevention. Emergency stroke cases are evaluated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through the Jeanes Emergency Department.

The Stroke Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission, the nation's premier hospital accrediting organization. This means that Jeanes meets or exceeds all performance standards required to improve the health of stroke patients. The Center's high standards and excellent results have also been recognized by the American Stroke Association and the American Heart Association's "Get with the Guidelines" certification.

Admission to a certified stroke unit such as that at Jeanes has been shown to improve patient survival. This is due not only to access to state-of-the-art technologies but also to the staff's speed and experience in managing the myriad details of acute stroke care such as drug administration, oxygenation, blood sugar, blood pressure and body position.

The multidisciplinary stroke team at Jeanes includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, cardiologists, radiologists, emergency physicians, nurse specialists and rehabilitation specialists. This experienced team can recognize early signs of stroke and intervene immediately with urgent diagnosis and appropriate care.

Long-term rehabilitation using the best available techniques completes the continuum of our stroke care. Rehabilitation services include speech and language therapy; evaluations by psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and pharmacists; and assistance in ongoing home care and use of assistive devices.

Another goal of the Jeanes Primary Stroke Center is to partner with area physicians to assess underlying and potentially reversible stroke risks, such as high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, diabetes, poor nutrition and use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs. Strategies include community education and screening events, lifestyle and dietary counseling, and targeted testing for at-risk patients. Jeanes specialists often work closely with primary care physicians to offer lifestyle and dietary counseling, as well as medication therapy.
