Minimally-Invasive
Weight Loss
Surgery
Get the Facts
Obesity is one of the leading causes of death
and disability in the United States. But being
overweight is not always due to a lack of will
power or exercise. Sometimes your family history
may be to blame. For some people, no amount
of dieting or exercising will help.
Is weight loss surgery
an option for you?
This type of surgery may be an option if at least
one of the following conditions applies to you:
• You are at least 50 pounds overweight
• Your body mass index (BMI) is over 40
• You have a BMI of 35 or more plus medical
problems such as diabetes, hypertension,
sleep apnea, arthritis or heart disease
• You have obesity-related problems that interfere
with work, family life or basic walking
• You are unable to lose weight or maintain
weight loss through traditional methods such
as diet and exercise
What are the benefits
of weight loss surgery?
This procedure is a serious commitment
to losing weight. You should talk to your
doctor about what the operation involves.
BENEFITS:
• After the procedure, from 40% to 60% of excess
body weight is usually lost over the next two to
three years.
• Many patients maintain long-term weight loss
if they are able to make the necessary lifestyle
changes and are committed to following their
nutrition plan and activity routine.
• Most obesity-related conditions such as diabetes
and high blood pressure often improve.
What is Laparoscopic Adjustable
Stomach Banding?
This minimally-invasive procedure involves placing
an adjustable silicone band around the upper portion
of the stomach, making a narrow opening through
which food travels. The band restricts the amount of
food a person can eat. Unlike other types of weight
loss surgery, the band can be removed at any time.
What should you expect
before and after surgery?
Weight loss surgery is a life-changing event. In
addition to the physical transformations you will
experience, you will be adjusting to many other
changes in your daily life. Challenges may relate
to eating and drinking, mental health, physical
activity and interpersonal relationships. At Jeanes,
we offer support groups that encompass all areas
of the process.
BEFORE SURGERY:
Potential patients are expected to attend a free
two-hour seminar. This
seminar addresses basic
principles of weight
loss surgery, complications,
expected outcomes, dietary
regimens and discharge
instructions.
AFTER SURGERY:
We offer ongoing support and education
through monthly group meetings. These
meetings help you deal with issues that
may accompany weight loss surgery.
