Patient Story - Brian Schaffer

Last fall Brian Schaffer, a 71-year-old retired school bus driver from the Mayfair section of Northeast Philadelphia, had difficulty breathing. Suffering from congestive heart failure, he could barely do anything. He visited several other area hospitals, but was not satisfied until he went to Jeanes Hospital—just 12 minutes from his home.

"My wife and I heard good things about the hospital from our neighbors," says Schaffer.

Schaffer's primary care physician first suggested that he see David M. Masiak, DO, a Temple cardiologist at Jeanes Hospital. When a cardiac catheterization ordered by Masiak indicated that Schaffer needed his aortic valve replaced, he was referred to Robert S. Boova, MD, the hospital's chief of cardiovascular surgery and a Temple heart surgeon.

Speaking of his January procedure, Schaffer says, "Both Dr. Boova and his nurse practitioner, Jacqueline, were very good. She explained everything to me, and the nurses were very attentive."

By the end of the spring Schaffer had shed a vest that was monitoring his heart and his heart-function efficiency had tripled.  As a result, he no longer needed to have an automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD)—a type of pacemaker that doctors were considering for him—implanted in his chest.

"I'm a 100 percent better," he reports. "I do a lot of work in our garden, I walk around the block, I exercise on a cardio rowing machine and my wife and I drive to stores and restaurants. I can do whatever I feel like because I feel good now."

When he walks around his neighborhood, Schaffer now tells his neighbors and parishioners at his church that, "If you need heart surgery, you should go to Dr. Boova."
